Smith Hosts Curry For First Match Of The Spring

Three of our new comers to the Spring 2016 Smith Tennis Team
Smith opened their spring tennis season on February 27 with a 9-0 victory over Curry College on the Pioneers' home courts.  Several new faces were seen as the Pioneers took to the indoor courts on Saturday.    Positive, prepared and enthusiastic, the Smith squad started strong and stayed strong throughout the afternoon relinquishing no matches and few games.  Captain Sam Peikes and Joanna Kim anchored number 1 doubles and took on Kimberly Love and Kayla Pete for a decisive 8-1 win.  Morgan Barney and Sarah Cassidy-Seymour brought in win number 2 with an 8-3 victory over Hannah Erikson and Alex Moschetto 8-2.  Not be outdone, number 2 doubles of Janan Fugel and Alexandra Steck settled in and brought in win number three over Laura Ferris and Katie Herrington 8-3.  Playing their first intercollegiate match (exhibition doubles position for Smith) were Leigh Johnson and Tess Ostoyich.  The duo showed their resolve and potential as they came from behind in the last round change to take the lead and the win 9-7.  A perfect doubles record of 3-0 in the official standings gave Smith a little cushion going into the singles but the team did not rest and continued the momentum.  Noa Dubin lead the singles at number 1 and stepped up to the challenge not permitting Kayla Pete a single game winning 6-0, 6-0 in a flawless match.  Sam Peikes at 2 singles, Joanna Kim at 4 singles and Janan Fugel at number 5 singles matched Noa's score closing out their opponents 6-0, 6-0.  Noa's offensive play, Sam's strategy,  Joanna's strength and Janan's shot selection caught the Coloniels without any answers.    Morgan Barney overcame a minor injury to defeat Hannah Erikson 6-2, 6-4 and Alexandra Steck returned to Smith Tennis this semester to represent the Pioneers and earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Alex Moschetto 6-3, 6-3 to secure the 9-0 team victory for Smith.  Additional singles exhibition players for Smith were Dana Smith and Maxine Ainetchi.   Smith Tennis will return to work on building what they started on this Saturday afternoon in preparation for the next dual match versus Regis.  For a complete listing of the scores and schedule, visit the Smith Athletics website at http://www.smithpioneers.com/index.aspx?path=wten.

The Smith Tennis fundraiser tennis events are scheduled for Sunday, March 6.  We hope, if you are a tennis player in the Northampton area, you will join us for an afternoon of tennis. All proceeds will be used for spring travel in spring of 2017.
